Soap operas are famous for their plots' twists and turns, often driven by their characters' secrets. But the secret revealed on famous daytime soap opera The Bold and The Beautiful this week has people talking even more than usual.

Spoiler alert!

It was revealed that the popular character Maya Avant, a beautiful female model, was born biologically male. The story goes on to reveal that Maya is transgender and transitioned from male to female at a young age.

This is special particularly because, according to reports, The Bold and The Beautiful is currently the only show on broadcast or cable to feature a transgender character as part of its regular cast. While this is not the first time a soap opera has featured a transgender character, the show is currently the only one to do so.

The presence of transgender characters and actors has increased in recent years. Acclaimed shows such as Amazon's Transparent and Netflix's Orange is the New Black have seen great success and feature such characters and actors.

The actress who plays Maya, Karla Mosley, is non-trans and is very excited to help spread transgender awareness and acceptance.
