This was posted on imgur and a top post on reddit (r/lgbt). The user is no longer listed but the story remains.
The poster, Nicholas, apparently came out to his parents a couple years ago. A short time later, he came home to his room to find the following on his pillow:
Beside the letter is a copy of
The Joy of Gay Sex, a bestselling book that is not just a sex guide, but "a resource on building self-esteem, and a trusted aid for coming out of the closet." The book provides positive and responsible advice for gays on everything from sex and relationship problems to online dating.
All in all, this is a great gift for someone recently out of the closet! Not only is it a positive sign of acceptance and love, but it is a great resource for the recently out person.
Beside the book, the letter reads:
Dear Nicolas,
We recognize that this is an unusual book for parents to give to their children. But we would prefer that you not learn about sex solely from gay porn, and neither of us feels well-qualified to give you personal advice for obvious reasons.
So hopefully this will answer a few questions, and help explain some things.

Added at the bottom of the letter was an additional note from Nicholas' father:
We want you to know that we support you in all ways, and love you very much, even if this seems like an odd gift.
