The parents of a one student in Boise, Idaho have removed their daughter from her school, South Junior High, because of the school's policy allowing a transgender student to use the girl's bathroom. The family claims they are worried about their "daughter's safety."
The parents, Pauline Adams and Jacob Smith, discovered last week that a transgender student at the school who was born biologically male but identifies and dresses female was permitted to use the girls' bathroom. The parents feel they were not properly informed of this decision.
Smith says, "We would not allow our child to share a restroom simultaneously at home so why would we be OK with it at school."
The parents claim they approached the school about the issue but did not get a response, and so they decided to remove their daughter. Adams worries that policies accommodating transgender students will spread, not only affecting bathrooms, but locker rooms as well.
According to a report by local news station KBOI, the Boise School District says that
"The Office of Civil Rights has informed all schools that they must provide access to the facility of the transgendered students' choice."
