Devin Norman from the small town of Corinth, Mississippi was in his local Walmart parking lot when he was confronted by James David Scott of Tishomingo County. According to some, Scott was upset about a post that Norman had made on social media, though the post has not yet been verified.

After words were exchanged, Scott "threw normal to the ground and kicked him several times in the face," according to a local news report. Scott ran from the scene but captured by police.

According to at least one witness, Scott yelled "Faggot! Faggot! Faggot!" as he stomped on Norman's face.

Norman was transported to the hospital with severe injuries to his face, including at least one broken cheekbone and possibly, according to other reports, facial fractures and broken eye sockets.

Local hate crime laws in Mississippi do not include sexual orientation, but Scott may be charged at the federal level, which would make the federal hate crime laws, which include sexual orientation, applicable.
