While visiting Naples, Italy this past weekend, Pope Francis lunched with around 90 inmates, 10 of whom came from a part of the prison that is reserved for inmates who identify as gay or transgender as well as inmates who are HIV-positive.
It is unclear from reports whether the 10 inmates from that section of the prison were selected by chance or not.
Some believe this is a groundbreaking step for the Roman Catholic Church, as its pontiff dines with LGBT people. Others believe that the story is insignificant, as the LGBT inmates were among dozens of others in a large room as they dined with the Pope.
