According to reports, the government of the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico may stop defending the island's ban on same-sex marriage. The territory's government is currently facing a lawsuit filed last March by two women from San Juan who are challenging the ban on gay marriage. Given the rapid legalization of same-sex marriage across the states and shifting public opinion, it's no wonder that the changes seen in U.S. states would soon spread to territories as well.
The island's governor, Alejandro García Padilla (pictured), who is the named defendant in the lawsuit, and his administration have until Friday to submit a response with the First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston, which is considering the suit.
While the news that the Puerto Rican government is considering a change in its stance on the issue is certainly encouraging, we will have to wait and see what ultimately transpires.
Destination gay wedding in Puerto Rico, anyone? Let's hope so!
