Nasser El-A, was only 15 when he came out to his family. Coming from a religiously conservative Lebanese family made this all the mroe difficult, despite living in the relatively gay-friendly city Berlin at the time.
Nasser's family reacted poorly and tried many ways to change his being gay. There was physical abuse. Finally, Nasser ran away and found a shelter which created a safe space for abuse victims.
When his mother invited him home promising his safety, Nasser returned. However, he wasn't safe. Nasser was kidnapped by his own father and two uncles. They tried to bring him to Lebanon, with the goal of forcing him to marry a woman. How can you force someone to marry? And they thought that would change is sexual orientation? The ignorance of these people is palpable.
Police found him on the Romanian-Bulgarian border and brought back to Germany. The courts in Berlin fined the kidnappers just around $2,000 for their criminal actions.
