In a recent article in the respected scientific publication Cell, a team of scientists showed that they could create human sperm and eggs from stem cells. The stem cells would come from the donor's skin. But the mind-blowing part is that the scientists could create sperm or eggs regardless of the donor's gender.
The breakthrough has wide-ranging implications for many types of problems and diseases. It could help many different types of people, not least of all infertile men and women, but it also opens the door to the possibility of babies biologically related to same-sex parents. The researchers have stated that the research they have been doing could be available to aid couples with fertility problems in as little as two years.
While the possibility of biological babies for same-sex couples may be some ways away, the issue raises ethical questions for many people, so there would still be many hurdles, least of all the scientific ones, to overcome.
